Alcohol Impairment Charts
Know Your Limits

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2000 America experienced the largest percentage increase in alcohol-related traffic deaths on record.

In 2000, 16,653 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol, representing 40 percent of the 41,821 people killed in all traffic crashes (versus 38.3% alcohol-related fatalities in 1999).

Caution: These charts are intended as a guide, only.

Alcohol affects individuals differently. Your blood alcohol level may be affected by your age, gender, physical condition, amount of food consumed and any drugs or medication. In addition, different drinks may contain different amounts of alcohol, so it's important to know how much and the concentration of alcohol you consume.

For purposes of this guide, "one drink" is equal to 1.25 oz. of 80 proof liquor, 12 oz. of regular beer, or 5 oz. of table wine.

A woman drinking an equal amount of alcohol in the same period of time as a man of an equivalent weight may have a higher blood alcohol level than that man. Therefore, women should refer to the female "Know Your Limits" chart.

Some states including Florida, have set .08% Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) as the legal limit for Driving Under the Influence. For commercial drivers, a BAC of .04% can result in a DUI conviction nationwide.

IMPAIRMENT BEGINS WITH YOUR FIRST DRINK.

FOR SAFETY'S SAKE, NEVER DRIVE AFTER DRINKING!

MAKING RESPONSIBLE CHOICES

If you choose to drink, remember these tips:

Never drink on an empty stomach. Food will slow alcohol's absorption into the blood stream.

When hosting a party, take the focus away from drinking. Be sure to provide non-alcohol drinks, plenty of food and plan activities for your guests.

Remember that a 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine and a 1.5 ounce shot of liquor contain about the same amount of alcohol.

When drinking, try to limit yourself to less than one drink per hour. It takes your liver about one hour to get rid of each drink. Coffee, a cold shower, and exercise will NOT speed up this process. Only TIME can make a person sober.

Alcohol may affect a person differently each time he or she drinks.

It takes less alcohol to affect a woman than it does a man of the same size. Women usually have less muscle tissue than men, so the alcohol is less diluted in the body. Women also have less of a certain stomach enzyme that beaks down alcohol.

Do not drink with the intention of getting drunk. This is when most problems occur.

If somebody chooses not to drink, respect his or her decision. Deciding whether or not to drink is an individual choice. The person may have very good reasons for not drinking. (Religion recovery, pregnancy, don't like the taste or effect, just not in the mood at the time).

People Who Should Not Drink Include

Minors under 21.  It is illegal for anyone under 21 to drink alcohol, and it is also illegal for an adult to sell or give alcohol to them, even their own child.

Driver or somebody who is operating a motor vehicle. By this time we should all know the dangers of mixing alcohol with a moving vehicle. Even one drink can slow down your reaction time and impair your vision. If you're going out for an evening, select a nondrinker to drive.

People who are working. Alcohol prevents a person from working at their top level. if you are operating heavy machinery, or are working in a dangerous location like scaffolding or a roof, you are not only hurting your performance, you're putting your life and others in jeopardy.

Participants in certain recreational activities. This includes hunting, snowmobiling, boating, and swimming, to name a few examples.

Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. Drinking during pregnancy causes birth defects called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effect (FAE). Babies with these problems look different than other children, and may have learning and behavioral problems that can last their entire lives.

Persons taking medicine. May overthecounter and prescription medicines an cause a dangerous reaction when combined with alcohol. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects.

Recovering alcoholics. Even a small amount of alcohol may trigger a relapse.
